I missed POTUS's afternoon press conference on August 15th because I was undergoing a colonoscopy at the time. I'll leave it to others to find the metaphor there -- I'm still too angry to fuck around with clever essay construction. It wasn't til the fentanyl wore off and I had eaten solid food for the first time in 36 hours that the laptop opened and once again affirmed my worst suspicions. The leader of our country stood tall and proud and left no reasonable doubt that he aligns himself with white nationalism. There is no way to parse the words he spoke that afternoon and find within them any logical thread that would suggest otherwise. He actually doesn't deserve the courtesy of such scrutiny, he long ago lost the right to "benefit of the doubt," but it doesn't matter -- on its face and in its content, the President's words exposed his racism and indifference to history.

It's time to impeach. Let this be one more citizen's demand for our national embarrassment to end, before this ignorant, racist, sexist, avaricious narcissist/sociopath permanently damages the freest society humanity has ever seen (so far). Or worse.
PS. A call from a concerned friend convinces me to clarify that my procedure was both routine and uneventful.
As the Potential End Of The United States (PEOTUS) comes closer (and closer), I know I am hardly alone in being nearly swallowed alive by my fear and rage. Like it or not, change is here, and from the perspective of those who believe that the incoming administration will lead us down a multitude of wrong paths, this is not positive change.

PEOTUS's bald contempt for basic civility should surprise no one who has followed (or rather, been force-fed media accounts of) his career since he first desperately groped for the limelight some thirty years ago. The Republican Party's willingness to cooperate with this proudly narcissistic and utterly unfit candidate, however, that move still shocks me.

I can admire the strategy, riding this ridiculous whirlwind into full control of our country's rudder, but to allow someone this vulgar to forever cheapen the Presidency? With social media attacks on celebrities, baseless boasting and an inability to complete coherent thoughts while speaking? I thought there were grown-ups at the helm, but what we are confronted with are adolescents obsessed with one-upmanship, with no vision of a future beyond the next campaign cycle and a deep-seated fear of women.

PEOTUS will spend his term furthering the effective work he started on the campaign trail, mocking opponents to avoid debating them, spreading easily-debunked lies without shame or retraction and goading world leaders into war. Those in his camp will thrill to his outrageous adventures, while the rest reel from each fresh insult, and the divisions will deepen and hatred of our fellow citizens will fester and the culture wars will metastasize into civil war. As we rage at each other, our own government will quietly strip the country for parts.

The last few days I've gone numb. I tried to watch the strategically-timed press conference on the 11th, but couldn't get past a few minutes. Watching that mouth move so much without saying anything ("Fantastic job." "It's gonna be phenomenal." "He's terrific, the greatest.") while half of our citizens are either too uneducated to notice, too cynical to care or just not paying attention was overwhelming. I don't yet know how to properly affect positive change, so the best I can do is to voice my dissent, even as a single squeak in the darkness.

To that end, I plan to join the rally in Lansing, MI on the steps of the Capitol Building on Saturday, January 21st. It's in conjunction with the Women's March set for Washington D.C. and I encourage anyone of a like mind to attend as well. There are Michigan rallies set for Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids too, but I'm choosing Lansing because of its significance as the seat of State power. There are a few hundred of these so-called "sister marches" around the country -- you can find the march closest to you here.

I'm sure others are looking forward to the chance to protest, to publicly state their case and enjoy the company of fellow dissenters, but I'm not. It's gonna be crowded, noisy, freezing cold, and likely impossible to find parking. Really, I don't feel like going to this fucking thing. But adding one more body to the crowd is the least I can do at this point, and the least any of us can do moving forward. This administration was voted in by less than half of the population ... we need to make sure everyone remembers that and let the people in charge of this nation know we're watching what they do and we won't remain docile when we disagree.

Even if it ruins our Saturday afternoon.
This man will drag us into war, a war that will fatten the pockets of billionaire industrialists and kill the sons/daughters of the very people who voted for him ... at least, that's the best case scenario, since warfare of the 21st Century is more likely to target civilians and physical/digital infrastructure than be fought on far-away foreign shores.

Trump will wake up with a headache one day, read a headline or two and then blast off an uninformed Twitter rant that spirals into holocaust on American soil. It might even be strategic -- it sounds like a far-fetched conspiracy theory but I have never before been afraid that a US president might invite a national disaster in order to declare martial law and gobble up power unlawfully. Some accused the Bush administration of this kind of shenanigan after 9/11, but not many took that seriously. Trump is amoral and venal enough that I don't trust him not to put us all in jeopardy for his own gain.

It's hard to believe such a thing, and I don't want to. What I do believe is that, either through blunder or design, Trump is going to bring destruction to these shores. I don't mean economic injustice, racial strife, religious intolerance or a general tone of ugliness and ignorance to the national conversation. We can expect stateside terrorism to explode and foreign countries drawing their sabres over the next few years.

It was funny when Stephen Colbert introduced Trump as "the last President of the United States" when he appeared as a guest on his late-night chat show. It isn't funny anymore. Nothing is funny anymore. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1405511345692469875.post-75072063382135623052016-11-29T10:59:00.001-08:002016-11-29T11:05:08.801-08:00

Trump wants to jail flag burners. His recent announcement via Twitter (I can't remember what they call it when someone posts on that website, and I'd rather not be reminded) seems to be another random declaration, as if he believes all a president has to do is make his will be known and it shall be so.

My stance has always been that if I spend my hard-earned money on an American flag, then I can do whatever I want with it. Wear it like a cape, fold it up and stick it in my trunk for emergencies, use it as a sheet on my son's bed, spray paint my name on it and hang it in the window ... along with all of these acceptable uses for a flag, it should also be legal to burn it for either symbolic effect or just for the hell of it, because something's gotta burn and that's all that's handy.

It's a free speech issue, and hardly a pressing one at that. Possibly one more calculated outrage meant to distract people from more important problems? Like our President-Elect's extreme conflict-of-interest issues regarding his vast yet opaque international business investments and his already transparent intention to use the office to his financial advantage? Or one of the many other more serious problems (which I don't have time to number right now) surrounding his impending coronation? Like how he's so unprepared for the job that the outgoing President has to train him, easily among the lowest points in American democracy (OK, that's the last one, I have a lot to do today)?

My suggestion is that this random salvo is strategic. Thanks to the Truth Revolt website for the graphic.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1405511345692469875.post-71359994170337645112016-11-28T11:56:00.000-08:002016-11-28T11:58:15.699-08:00OVERCOME BY OUTRAGEI read the news before properly awakening this morning, a bad habit I must work to cease. Without food, caffeine or a full eight behind me, the terrors of the nation drained me outright before I had a chance to breathe. Panic and righteous indignation drew me to the keyboard and I began to pound out what I intended to be a full account of my thoughts, listed point by point, in no particular service to any identifiable thesis except "everything is fucked, right?"

Meanwhile, my son frolicked and hectored, as is his due, even as I steamed and bristled, and it took no small amount of self-control to fold down the laptop and turn my attention to a large circus-themed picture puzzle on the kitchen table. I'm not counting this as moral victory, just correction of an error, and I'm not going to suggest that this humble father-son activity soothed my nerves or gave me a rosier view of the world, because it absolutely didn't. What I did get was a chance to re-read the missive after a few hours, and realized it missed its mark by not having one -- I can spend 1000 words listing each topic that makes me angry, but that doesn't make it worth foisting onto the world. As an intellectual exercise or a vent of emotion, it had value for me, but as a use of my morning? Dubious.

But that's where many of us are right now. So blindsided by outrageous developments in American politics and culture rising up a half dozen at a time, every day a new shooting, a new slur, a new scandal, a new outrage and I'm using that word twice in this sentence because at a certain point it's the only word that will do. Who has the time or mental space to consider even one long enough to understand and comprehend an event's meaning, or even the accuracy of the information? I have a three year old to care for, I should not be spending my day agog as each fresh insult to our freedom and safety wafts over the airwaves or through the ethernet. But as all the walls crumble about us, how can we not try to stay informed? And even in a vacuum, without the responsibility of employment and family, how would one keep up? How to properly and soberly examine each issue, draw a coherent conclusion and decide how to act? Any one topic could topple an empire, so how does one cope?

I have no answer, only the question. Every day the wife and I identify one more charity we should donate to, one more organization we should volunteer with, one more petition that should probably be signed. But not every charity is virtuous, not every organization is in a position to make substantial change, and not every petition will have teeth, and the patience and focus required to make the right choices in these areas is often beyond me.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1405511345692469875.post-5804044005975569752016-11-17T08:58:00.003-08:002016-11-17T09:14:38.480-08:00A PLEDGE FOR LATTER DAYS

After a decade of earning my living in part or in whole through writing, not to mention a lifetime of relying on writing as a way of presenting myself to the world, I hit a wall in 2012. In the course of a year I lost my mother to cancer and learned I was to be the father of a newborn at age 45, two realities I never anticipated or planned for. I had only recently relocated to my home state of Michigan after a long, fitfully fruitful residence in Seattle, another of those major life changes that can disrupt a man's psychic equilibrium in the best of circumstances.

Through my blog, my freelance work and the songs that once poured out of me, I have spent thousands of words on my opinions about music, film and art, my search for philosophical balance when truth cannot be known, not to mention petty clashes with former comrades I barely remember anymore. In the face of momentous change, I decided that my emotions and attitudes were no longer anyone's business, that my grief or happiness or confusion was not for public consumption on any platform, and I went as cold as I've ever been.

I felt ashamed for my past openness, cringed at the arrogance of declaring judgments without proper reflection, mourned the waste of time and energy spent on ephemeral matters. This state of affairs affected more than my output of words -- I am more circumspect in most of my relationships since, and while parenthood is bound to constrain any social life it touches, my slide toward hermitry had already begun before we even suspected. But while I kept up with a modicum of personal poetry unmeant for other eyes and the odd stab at new songs without satisfaction, journals, blogs, social media posts, this activity ceased -- even emails became difficult to finish.

Aside from a few minor blurbs related to various musical misadventures, I found myself not only unwilling to write, but often unable. The rare burst of inspiration that might lead to a keyboard was usually challenged by an overwhelming panic and dread that froze my fingers and muddied my brain, and I succumbed to this weakness more often than not. Without this outlet to organize my thoughts, communicate with my fellows and declare my place in the world, I developed a creeping identity crisis, unsure of who I am now or who I will become in the eyes of my son.

I have not expressed my views of the election in any public forum. I didn't think it was productive to join the echo chamber of Facebook or address the empty lecture hall that is this blog. For what I could see, more than most of the populace had chosen a side long, long ago and all that remained was the counting of hands. I saw no need to debate Trump supporters or trade high fives with those who opposed him.

But now that we are all living in this speculative fiction novel version of America, where the biggest, most cynical publicity stunt of modern times succeeded in ways its inventor never intended, each of us must take stock of our true values and decide how we will live with each other. I still doubt my persuasive powers when it comes to matters of politics -- just like most of us, I am prone to knee-jerk reactions and emotionally-driven decisions that don't always prove prudent after cooling. And as with so many of my generation, my introduction to politics was watching the Nixon impeachment hearings on television, instilling an early cynicism and understanding that politicians were never to be trusted implicitly. So I can't hope to persuade, for I am rarely persuaded.

But what I can do is reflect upon, identify and codify the core values that I believe in and will stand up to defend. The basic truths as I see them that will determine how I react to important, potentially historic events that are sure to keep us all breathless for the next four years. Above all, freedom of speech, thought and movement. Equal opportunity for all groups, and the strength that comes from a diversity of viewpoints and experiences. Maturity, flexibility and transparency from our elected leaders and their representatives, and non-violent action from opponents who publicly protest. These are not partisan viewpoints. These are the values I will rely upon to evaluate the actions of anyone on any stripe of the political rainbow, right, left or center. Violation of these essential ideas will require me to take a stand and take action in whatever small way I am capable of, to add one more voice to the chorus of discontented who want the same United States of America we were always promised ... a vast, sprawling land of loudmouths with the freedom to be any goddamn thing they want to be.

Thanks for listening. Hey, when's the last time you watched Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood? Do yourself a favor, he's pretty much right about everything. More on that next time ...
Evidence circa 7.2016 that The End Times persists ... material enough for a double LP exists in coded form, but until certain demands are met we remain in crisis. This is yet another potential apocalypse, a dangerous possibility, a probable disaster, a palpable warning of grave proportions. These desperate times plead for reckless, foolhardy intervention, no less than a revolution not simply of deed, not merely intent, but utter immolation of this decadent infrastructure we call "civilization" ... until we can gather without scrutiny, blaze without smoke or fire, argue without rancor, make love without boundaries and erect the effigies of our bidding, then there is no music, and our actions will remain reaction, our efforts remain ephemeral, our demands recorded duly for time and unearned nostalgia to parse in quiet isolation.

There is no sleep for us in this house. The transition from family bed to private quarters has not been welcomed, in fact has been deemed betrayal itself ... we are all a bit hazy and on edge, as so it shall remain until the advantages and satisfactions of a room of one's own dawn upon our son and he accepts this important first step toward independence.

In other developments, I've been studying up on Satan's influence on rock and pop music, particularly the deceitful nature of the CCM industry and so-called "Christian Rock" ...
Available now, after yet another lifetime of wait. As with BSH-003, a combination of production mishaps and personal disruptions delayed the release of this record by at least a year. The real-life travails were sweeter this time, the birth of my son rather than the death of my mother, but equally demanding on my attentions. Hopefully the next record can meet light with more expediency ... we've begun recording new songs at the usual joints (Backseat and Ghetto) for what will either be a vinyl LP or another succession of 7" singles, depending on how the results hang together. So far only one review, but it's one I'm happy with -- Brett Callwood of the Metro Times describes "Days Of Plenty" as a cross between The Mamas & The Papas and the original Wicker Man soundtrack. I'll buy that for a dollar, and now you can too.

Lori and I have been circumspect about exposing too many photos of Dion to the dark ether of the internet, despite our desire to show off his bright eyes and drooling smile, but since she recently posted a few to her Facebook page (which are undoubtedly the property of some vast sinister stock photo company by now) I'll take a chance on one as well ...

This is actually a month or so ago, he's already bigger and toothier by now. I will continue to post out-of-date photos of my baby boy at irregular intervals in the future, so don't go anywhere. In the meantime, for no particular reason other than I recently found it and consider it charming, here is a photo of my late grandfather and namesake, Fred Storz, as a boy ...

He's the kid on the right, circa sometime in the 1920s perhaps? As there were no talent scouts prowling Erie PA back then, he and his pal never took their rightful places in the cast of The Little Rascals, and were doomed to live normal, healthy and productive lives.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1405511345692469875.post-61357309030907054632014-02-26T10:40:00.004-08:002014-02-26T10:40:54.715-08:00Haven't posted for some time ... I spend my days these days tending to my son Dion, watching him grow and trying to make him laugh (so far, a pushover). He's in the 8-month range, bright and wild and greedy for everything, so most of my waking moments are occupied with his hi-jinks. I haven't much energy for any other kind of action lately, but just recently a handful of projects I've been involved with over the past few years have come to fruition that are worth crowing over ...

Last spring, during the weeks leading up to Dion's arrival, I got the chance to pen liners for a newly remastered set of vintage recordings from CRIME, the amazing late-70s era punk band from San Francisco. The deal with Kitten Charmer Records was brokered by a mutual pal (thanks, Deming!) and I got the nod from the band thanks to an article I wrote about CRIME some years ago for Resonance Magazine in Seattle. CRIME is a long time favorite of mine, a crucial influence on bands I formed in my early 20s, so I was as excited about the long-overdue resurrection of this material as I was to write about it.

I supplied several drafts for the LP/CD, but as I was pretty preoccupied by all the imminent baby business, I fell out of contact with Kitten Charmer and assumed they had just gone a different way. Well, as it turns out they did indeed use my notes (along with a brief essay by Thurston Moore) for the recent CD release ... a vinyl LP edition was supposed to appear as well, but apparently hasn't surfaced yet. Regardless, MURDER BY GUITAR 1976-1980 on CD sounds great, there are numerous rare tracks along with raw, primal classics like "Hot Wire My Heart" ...

... and I'm proud to be a part. You can buy it from places like Amazon and such, but why not just get it from Goner Records?

I also just got the new vinyl LP from SCORPION VS. TARANTULA, old friends from way back who settled in Phoenix AZ and have been tearing the place up over there for some time. They came to Ghetto Recorders in Detroit last summer, mere days after Dion's birth, so I visited for a bleary, sleep-starved afternoon and added a decidedly off-the-cuff guitar solo to the track "Hurt and Dangerous." The whole thing is balls-out, as ferocious as the cover art suggests, so check it out for a full shot of AC/DC vs. Pagans-style riff action.

The SEGER LIBERATION ARMY appeared on a split 7" with Standing 8 Counts as part of Mere Noise Records' 2013 singles club and I got a copy a few weeks back. The song is "Innervenus Eyes," recorded a few years back with five other musty old Seger relics, so it's good to see one of these tracks creep out into the real world (rumors of a comprehensive vinyl collection of all the SLA material remain unsubstantiated). The Mere Noise single is sold out already, but you can hear it below via Diamond's Soundcloud ... that's Jim surfing the outer limits during the coda -- we were all surprised when that happened, but luckily the take was taped.

Lastly, the long-simmering BSH-004 release comes closer to reality, as test pressings arrived yesterday and upon routine inspection appear satisfactory. This pressing plant is the second -- I went through a protracted trial run with another company that led to the delivery and rejection of 500 damaged singles, but I'm safely in the arms of Archer now, where I should have started in the first place. Lesson learned, always buy Michigan. We also recently began rehearsals for a new End Times LP with the core ensemble ... songs have been chosen, but adjunct players are still being sought, so breaking ground in the studio won't occur for some months. Contact the official End Times email (thesearetheendtimes via google) with any comments or concerns ...

OK, time to go back to my fatherly duties. The prince sleeps for now, but there is laundry to burn.
Almost four hours worth of live metal professionally filmed in Germany circa 1983 -- Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Priest, Def Leppard, Ozzy, Quiet Riot, Krokus and Michael Schenker Group. See Rick Allen with two arms, Ozzy fronting a synth-heavy post-Rhodes band, Kevin DuBrow getting on everyone's last nerve ... it's all ridiculous and bracing in equal measures.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1405511345692469875.post-65324758410475399002013-05-07T11:47:00.001-07:002013-05-07T11:50:57.670-07:00
Another future End Times hit, recorded by Diamond in The Ghetto. Again. 7" vinyl single -- b/w "Cursed With Hot Blood" -- planned for this summer, release date TBA, catalog number BSH-004.
